Our services are offered at each of our hospitals and many imaging centers throughout the greater Charlotte area.
Presbyterian Neurology Center uses leading-edge vascular diagnostic technology, such as transcranial Doppler ultrasound, to help prevent vascular disorders including stroke. The center's vascular testing lab was the first in Charlotte to earn accreditation in intracranial cerebrovascular testing from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission - Vascular Testing.
Using transcranial Doppler, patients at risk for stroke are monitored for clots in the bloodstream. If no clots are found, patients are reevaluated six months later. The technology is also used to find patent foramen ovale (PFO), one cause of stroke. This is called a "bubble study." In addition, transcranial Doppler is used to manage the ongoing care of stroke survivors. It can monitor for increased narrowing in the arteries of the brain and determine how well the brain has adjusted after a stroke.
In addition, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center was one of the first in the area to offer clinical fMRI brain mapping technology, a leading-edge tool that benefits patients who plan to undergo brain surgery or require evaluation of neurological deficits. Patients who may have a brain tumor, epilepsy, a movement disorder, an arteriovenous malformation or who have had a stroke can benefit from this sophisticated technology, which can be used by neurosurgeons prior to and during neurosurgery procedures and also for the evaluation of neurological deficits.
