Understanding The Problem

Our first step toward helping you sleep better is for you to complete a sleep questionnaire and keep a sleep diary.

One of our experienced sleep physicians will review the information with you (and your bed partner, if possible) to best understand your sleep habits. We may also perform a brief physical examination. Often, this is enough information for your physician to make a preliminary diagnosis and recommend a course of treatment.

In some cases, the cause of your sleep problem may not be clear, and we may recommend you have a polysomnogram (also known as a sleep study). This is done overnight in a private room at one of our sleep centers, where we monitor your sleep patterns. During your overnight stay, we tape tiny pads to your skin to monitor your heart, brain and breathing patterns, in much the same way as we would check your blood pressure.

Our sleep center is designed similar to a hotel with private bedrooms, bathrooms and showers. And to ensure that you are comfortable, our staff is always immediately available to help with your needs.

In some cases, other tests may be needed. However, along every step of the way, we will make sure you understand the course of action we suggest.

Recommending a Treatment

After all tests are completed, your physician will discuss the results with you and recommend the most appropriate treatment from the many options available. This may also include a recommendation that you see other medical specialists.

Most sleep problems can be effectively treated once we know the cause. Some treatments require medication, while others may require a change in daily habits or work schedule. However, rest assured that we will do everything possible – using the latest in sleep diagnostics and treatments – to help you once again get a good night’s sleep.
