Through a partnership with Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care, the Jack and Linda Matney Foundation established a fund to construct a labyrinth within Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. Now open in Presbyterian Medical Center's center courtyard, the Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth offers a place of peace, solace and comfort to patients, families, visitors and staff.

Jack's Story - The Creation of the Labyrinth

Jack Matney was a patient of Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care and later became a patient on the Harris Hospice Unit within Presbyterian Medical Center. Through the difficulties of Jack's illness, his wife Linda needed a spiritual outlet beyond the chapel, beyond the walls of the hospital - yet close enough to be at Jack's side in a moment's notice.

The same deep faith that brought Jack and Linda together inspired The Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth - an affirmation of the life of her husband and a gift to those accompanying a loved one on a difficult journey.

What is a Labyrinth?

Dating back to the 14th century, a labyrinth is a geometric flat surface with winding, circuitous paths that originally symbolized a pilgrim's walk with God. Walking a labyrinth has been shown effective in reducing anxiety, lowering blood pressure and breathing rates and decreasing chronic pain.

Labyrinth Herb Garden

The McGill Rose Garden has graciously provided the Labyrinth Herb Garden, located in the corner of the courtyard. Focusing on rosemary, lavender and sage, the Labyrinth Herb Garden incorporates traditional herbs known for their soothing, aromatic properties.

Prayer Wall

Leave your healing and intercessory prayer requests at our Prayer Wall, located in the courtyard of Presbyterian Medical Center near the Jack Matney Memorial Labyrinth, and have peace in the knowledge that our prayer ministry groups will reverently and respectfully lift your request in prayer.
