To treat arrhythmias, also known as irregular heartbeats, our physicians use a nonsurgical procedure known as radio frequency ablation. It is performed in the Novant Health Heart and Vascular Institute's electrophysiology (EP) lab.

Radio frequency ablation is recognized as one of the most effective treatments for eliminating fast heartbeats. During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through the groin and guided all the way to the heart. When the catheter reaches the area to be treated, radio frequency energy is delivered. The energy destroys the heart tissue which causes the rapid impulses of the heart.
