While some risk factors such as your age, gender and family history cannot be changed, there are other risk factors that you can control, including exercise, diet and rejecting tobacco products, that can reduce your risk of developing cancer.
  • Tobacco Cessation –

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, and cigarette smoking alone is directly responsible for at about one-third of all cancer deaths each year. “Solutions for Smokers” is a program designed to help you eliminate tobacco use from your life.

  • Nutrition Education for Cancer Prevention –

Eating a healthy diet that is low in fat, high in fiber and filled with plenty of fruits and vegetables may help to lower cancer risk. Novant Health Cancer Center’s nutrition services can help you determine what’s best for you.

  • Sun Safety –

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, but it is largely preventable. Protect yourself by staying in the shade, wearing sunscreen and covering exposed areas of skin with appropriate clothing, such as a hat.  If you have an area on your skin that looks suspicious, have it evaluated by a Novant Health dermatologist.
