Radiation Oncology

Novant Health Cancer Center’s Radiation Oncology Department combines the latest in radiation technology with expert, compassionate care to provide you and your family with the most advanced treatment options for your cancer.

Our radiation oncology team includes board-certified radiation oncologists, registered nurses, registered radiation therapists, physicists and other cancer treatment personnel trained in all phases of radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy is often prescribed in combination with surgery or chemotherapy and can be delivered in either an inpatient or outpatient setting. New techniques such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) enable us to deliver higher doses of radiation to cancer cells while limiting exposure of normal healthy tissue.

As a new patient, you will receive an assessment from one of our specially trained nurses before your initial consultation with the radiation oncologist. During this assessment, you will learn about the side effects of radiation treatment as well as receive referrals to our many support services, including:
A wide range of radiation oncology treatments are available at Novant Health Cancer Center, including:
  • Radiation Therapy

Also called radiotherapy, radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and stop them from growing. The rays are directed at the body by a machine called a linear accelerator.

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) –

Intensity modulated radiation therapy is a state-of-the-art radiation delivery system that uses CT scans to create a three-dimensional image of the tumor and precisely deliver radiation to all sides. Novant Health Cancer Center was the first center in the region to offer IMRT.

  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) –

Stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy can treat tumors in sensitive, difficult-to-reach areas such as the brain, spine, liver and lungs with new levels of accuracy.

  • Brachytherapy –

With brachytherapy, radioactive seeds placed directly in or near the tumor allow cancer to be treated with minimal affects to the healthy tissue around the tumor. Learn more about specific brachytherapy treatments »
