The biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) usually consists of two parts - intestinal bypass and restriction – to help the body absorb fewer calories. This is usually done for individuals whose obesity is so severe that their risk for life-threatening problems, such as heart attack, stroke and respiratory problems, is very high.
During biliopancreatic diversion, your surgeon will create a bypass around part of your small intestine so that fewer calories are absorbed during that part of the digestion process. During the duodenal switch, a part of your stomach will be removed to permanently make it smaller and help you eat less.
