Each year, area golfers tee-off at the Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital Golf Classic. Proceeds from the tournament go to benefit the patients of Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital.
In 2012, the 15th annual Novant Health Hemby Children's Hospital Golf Classic was held on Monday, April 23, at Carmel Country Club. Funds raised from the 2012 and 2013 tournaments will go toward a two-year project: up-fitting Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center’s new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
The Current PICU
It is terrifying for a parent to entrust the care of a critically-ill child to strangers. Currently, critically-ill infants, children, and adolescents up to age 18 receive constant care and specialized monitoring and therapies in the eight-bed PICU. Imposing medical equipment and a sterile environment lacking privacy compounds the gravity of the situation for both parents and children, making it difficult to focus on the healing process. Novant Health seeks to create a different experience for pediatric patients and their families.
The New PICU
Our new PICU will enhance Novant Health and Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital's goal of providing care in a child-centric, family-friendly environment. The revamped and expanded PICU will be completely geared toward children, their needs and their interests. There will be room for families at the bedside to support their children in their greatest time of need, and private rooms for much-needed family respite.
We look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of this exciting project and how it will serve our community and our families.

2010 and 2011 Golf Classics
The total raised for the 2010 and 2011 tournaments was $425,000. Funds raised supported upfitting the new Novant Health Pediatric Emergency Department, which opened in October of 2011. Hospitals can often be a scary environment for children. At Novant Health, we work to create child-friendly environments where children feel safe, secure and at home. This unique venue has transformed the typical hospital setting into one that has a very distinct, separate entrance with a 3D image of our Hemby mascot, Dr. Getwell, greeting every pediatric patient. An underwater theme flows throughout the entire children's Emergency Department, with customized water-themed murals in each exam room and a virtual aquarium.
Since inception, the Hemby Golf Classic has raised over $2.6 million in support for projects in Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. In addition to the Novant Health Pediatric Emergency Department, other past projects have included, building the Hemby Theatre, purchasing a pediatric critical care transport unit, purchasing giraffe beds for the neonatal intensive care unit, and so much more. Thank you to all of our supporters, past and present, that help to make the Hemby Golf Classic such an incredible event, year after year. And special thanks to our Hemby Golf Classic Committee that works tirelessly to raise funds to support Novant Health’s littlest patients.
