Local Family Establishes Foundation in Honor of Infant Son
A new fund has been created to benefit patients at Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital. Started by Meg McElwain and Frank Turner, III, the Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund, named in honor of their infant son who’s battling a rare form of leukemia, will raise money to support families facing challenging pediatric diagnoses and educate the community about childhood cancer.
“When Mitchell was diagnosed with cancer at three months old, we were thrown into a world that was completely foreign to us,” said McElwain. “We’ve been humbled by the kindness, compassion and support extended to us by the experts at Hemby Children’s Hospital, our church and the community, and we see this fund as a way to give back to families in need of assistance and to hospital services like child life that rely on the generosity of the community to keep running.”
Plans for the first event supporting the Mitchell Bays Turner Pediatric Fund are already in works. March Madness for Mitchell will take place March 23, 2013, at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. Tickets are $75 and the community is invited to come out and cheer on their favorite basketball team while enjoying food and drink, prizes and a silent auction. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
