Funds to be used toward Nursing Education
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation recently received a $1.6 million dollar gift from the estate of Margaret “Jean” Norwood Culver, a Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing alumnae from the Class of 1942. Funds will be used to support nursing education, with $500,000 committed to creating a mobile patient simulation lab and the remaining $1.1 million going toward nursing scholarships.
Upon graduating from nursing school, Culver became a military nurse, serving two years in the Asian Pacific Theater. Following active duty, she spent 35 years in the Army Reserves while also working at the VA Hospital in Atlanta.
Mike McCarty, artist and long-time neighbor, remembers Culver as a modest yet generous woman. Touched by her friendship, McCarty painted a portrait memorializing Culver to be hung in the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Classroom at Presbyterian Hospital. “She was like family to me,” McCarty remarked. “It was an honor for me to pay tribute to her in this way.”
The portrait unveiling and check presentation took place during the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing Homecoming on Sept. 8, an annual event for nursing alumni.
